ADD and ADHD how do they underwrite these?

It seems like everyday I talk to at least one person who has ADD or ADHD. If they don't have it maybe one of their family members do. Since every Illinois health insurance company is different I want to clear up some of the confusion about the underwriting of these conditions.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, BCBSIL, wants some one to have been diagnosed at least 6 months ago, with no ongoing counseling.  They will allow you to be on one medication if you are well controlled on it.  One of the issues we have run into lately is with people that have a dual diagnosis of ADD and OCD.  BCBSIL will decline someone with this dual diagnosis or ADD plus other psychiatric conditions.  Having this dual diagnosis is quite common, I'm not sure if doctors are typically just diagnosing someone with this or if they are really screening for it.
